Important Changes to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC-2006)

A special tripartite committee met at the International Labour Organization headquarters in Geneva to discuss important changes to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC-2006).

Key changes include:

- Recognising seafarers as key workers, ensuring they receive the support they need during crises.

- Stricter repatriation rules to ensure seafarers can return home safely if needed.

- Mandatory shore access without the need for a visa or special permit, allowing seafarers to go ashore more easily.

- Improved protection against bullying and harassment on board.

The ILO also endorsed the recommendation that ships should carry the International Medical Directory for Seafarers and Fishermen (ICS) to provide medical assistance to seafarers, particularly in remote areas.

A key addition to the results was an agreement to hold a future joint meeting between the ILO and IMO member states to consider and possibly agree on rules on seafarers’ hours of work and rest.

The new amendments to the MLC will enter into force in December 2027 after ratification. The next meeting of the ILO Special Tripartite Committee is scheduled for April 2028.
