The 1st Officer Navigation is a licensed deck officer, and is responsible for:

 Standing a regular watch as assigned by the Captain.

 All navigation equipment on the bridge and reporting defects to the Master.

 Keeping navigation equipment log books correct and current.

 Performing all Voyage planning.

 Environmental voyage planning. The 1st Officer Navigation includes all MARPOL related regulations and limits into his voyage planning as well as local regulations.

 Keeping all chart folios and publications correct and current according to the latest Notice to Mariners.

 All merchant flags and pennants.

 Port Questionnaires file and providing traffic, tidal and current information on ports and congested waters.

 Submitting a final technical itinerary each voyage to the Staff Chief Engineer with required information.

 Performing emergency duties as assigned on the Muster List.

 The safety and security of the vessel, passengers and crew while on watch in port.

 The safe navigation and piloting of the vessel while on watch underway.

 Assisting the Staff Captain to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the ship.

 Having an adequate understanding of relevant rules, regulations, codes, and guidelines and

being fully conversant with the Company’s Safety Management System.

 Monitoring all communication systems (Including/performing Daily, Weekly and Monthly GMDSS Tests).
